Into Thin Air
Review by Jeremiah McGowan
“This forms the nub of a dilemma that every Everest climber eventually comes up against: in order to succeed you must be exceedingly driven, but if you're too driven you're likely to die.”
"I suspected that each of my teammates hoped as fervently as I that Hall had been careful to weed out clients of dubious ability, and would have the means to protect each of us from one another's shortcomings." (Krakauer 51).
"Mortality had remained a conveniently hypothetical concept, an idea to ponder in the abstract. Sooner of later the divestiture of such a privileged innocence was inevitable, but when it finally happened the shock was magnified by the sheer superfluity of the carnage…" (Krakauer 287).

Testimonial
Into Thin Air is a thrilling novel based off of true events, recorded by Jon Krakauer. This novel is about the journey of Jon and his team to the top of mount Everest, and the acculturation process of adjusting to the elevation. Their team faced battling their way to the summit, and transcend the difficulties. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for an exciting read, that never loses your attention. He does a very good job of mixing summary with exciting events, leaving the reader on the edge of her seat constantly expostulating for more. This book not only is a first hand account of the journey on Everest, but also has tremendous research to back up every claim by the author. This sets this book apart, because the stories and events are realistic and incredible. If I were to read this novel again, I would read it in a smaller amount of time to fully grasp every detail mentioned. Overall Into Thin Air stands out as a thriller filled novel, with meritorious research and authenticity.

About the Author
Jon Krakauer is an American writer and mountaineer, who is most famous for his books Into The Wild and Into Thin Air. Krakauer grew up in Oregon, where he was introduced to climbing at a young age of 8. After graduating from Hampshire College in 1976, Krakauer divided his time between Colorado, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest, supporting himself primarily as a carpenter and commercial salmon fisherman. For the next two decades, however, his life revolved around climbing mountains. Krakauer’s father was greatly disappointed that Krakauer didn’t go into medicine, but Krakauer was passionate about writing and climbing, and has accomplished many great mountain climbing feats, including mount Everest. Krakauer has a raw style of writing, that allows the reader to fully connect and commiserate with his stories. He is not afraid of coming of the wrong way, as long as his point gets across. In all, he separates himself through the brash tone of his writings, yet relates to the readers by showing pain and loss.
